The Biodynamic Approach

Biodynamic Cranial or Biodynamic Osteopathy is a philosophy and treatment modality building on the work and experience of Dr. Sutherland, the man who structured Cranial Osteopathy into a system. It is the work of Dr. James Jealous, a teacher and clinician who emphasises the importance of the body in its environment, the body as part of the natural world.

If Osteopathy is based in anatomy, Biodynamics is based in Embryology. Embryology (the study of the formation and growth of the body in utero) is a vitalistic / biological example of forces at work guiding formation, forces which are guiding gene expression and replication in the foetus. These forces can be compared to the chef creating the meal, without him there are only the raw ingredients. (Dr. E Bechlschmitt.

These forces that are guiding embryogenesis are the forces that become, in the adult, the agents of healing and health, according to Dr. Jealous. The rhythms Osteopaths are feeling for are all expressions of this primal force, which Dr. Sutherland named Primary Respiration, the breathing or rhythmic movement of the body which is there before we take our first (thoracic) breath, the rhythm of life that underlies all movement in the body.
The treatment is based on harmonising with these integral forces and helping them express more fully, meaning a greater expression of health.
